Banknotes from the Republic of Hawaii (1894-98) are quite rare. They sport outstanding vignettes and colors. The Republic of Hawaii ceded itself to the United States in 1898 and was organized as a territory of the U.S. in 1900. It became a state in 1959.

Prior to becoming the Republic of Hawaii in 1894, the islands were ruled by a provisional government (1893-94). During the years 1874-1893, Hawaii was ruled by King Kalakaus (1874-1891) and Queen Liliuokalani (1891-93). There are a few remaining examples of the currency of the realm, in the form of silver certificate of deposit issues from (i) the Kingdom's Department of Finance (1879-80) and (ii) Bank of Claus Spreckels & Co. (1886-87). These early issues are very rare.

Below you will find pictures of some of the Republic of Hawaii banknotes in the collection. These are all proprietary proofs made by The American Bank Note Company. They lack the color of the issued notes, and some of them are punch cancelled with "Specimen".
