Banknotes from El Salvador

The government of El Salvador began issuing banknotes in 1877, and the central bank issued two series of beautiful notes in 1934 and 1938. The most striking notes, however, were issued by the country’s eight commercial banks during the years 1880 through 1931. These specialized notes has outstanding vignettes and made use of strong colors. The principal printer was the American Bank Note Company.

PMG’s population reports show that most of the early notes are scarce. A great number of the notes have only a single note graded, and a high percentage of the graded notes are specimens and proofs.
