Banknotes from Cuba date back to the Spanish Administration that ran from 1857 to 1898. During the 1868-76 Revolution era, banknotes were also issued by La Republica de Cuba. Independence from Spain was proclaimed in May 1902, and the National Bank of Cuba issued its first banknotes in 1905. Republica de Cuba issued banknotes during the years 1934-49 and Banco Nacional de Cuba during 1949-50. The PMG population reports show that the very early Cuba notes are scarce, as are the notes from the National Bank of Cuba (Pick numbers 65-68 have been PMG-graded in specimen variety only.) Many of the notes from the Banco Nacional de Cuba are relatively common, particularly in the issued varieties.
