Belgian Congo banknotes are very popular with banknote collectors, aided by striking vignettes and colors. In addition, the back sides of many of the notes are also highly graphical. The vignettes are mainly of African people, animals, and landscapes.

The 1896 issues are from Etat Independant du Congo (Independent State of the Congo), while later issues beginning in 1912 are from Banque do Congo Belge (Bank of the Belgian Congo).

The PMG population report indicates that all of the Belgian Congo notes are scarce, to the point that even lower-grade notes are highly sought after. As of October 12, 2009, PMG had graded no gem-quality notes from prior to the 1940s. Belgian Congo specimens and proofs do not seem to be as prevalent as are those from many other countries.
